Atoumo, scientifically called Alpinia Zerumbet is a rhizomatous perennial plant native to East Asia, imported through immigration to French Guiana.
In Brazil it is widely used as an infusion to treat many illnesses including hypertension, headaches, sinusitis and rheumatism, while in Martinique, where it is called 'Thé Péyi', it is mainly used for flu due to its rich presence of germicidal and antioxidant essential oils.
The plant was called 'à-tous-maux' (literally for all ills), later contracted to 'atoumo' by the Creoles because it was known to be the remedy for all daily ailments
